Romance on Maui: 7 Ways to Rekindle Your Love While on Vacation

There’s a reason that hundreds of couples travel to Maui to get married or renew their vows every year. It really is one of the most romantic destinations in the U.S.!

Whether you’re looking for adventurous activities to enjoy with your sweetheart or simply wanting to share experiences that will deepen your bond with each other, you can find exactly what you’re looking for when you vacation on Maui.

Here are seven of our favorite ways to spend time with our loved ones on our favorite Hawaiian island.

1. Go on a Maui Waterfall Hunt

When you tour the rainforests of Maui, it can seem like there is literally a new waterfall to enjoy around every corner. Some, like Twin Falls or the ‘Ohe’o Falls (Seven Sacred Pools), are easily accessible, with fairly small falls (10-40 ft) and gorgeous swimming holes to boot.

Others, like the 400-ft Waimoku Falls at the end of the Pipiwai Trail or the 1100-ft Honokohau Falls take a bit more effort to enjoy. In fact, Honokohau Falls is in the steep cliffs of the West Maui Mountains and can be viewed only by helicopter!

You can look up well known Maui waterfalls online but if you keep your eyes peeled while driving the Road to Hana or around the north side of West Maui you’ll discover a number of unmarked waterfalls all over the place.

A word of caution when hunting waterfalls and swimming holes on Maui — flash floods are a real danger here and unfortunately, unsuspecting people die every year getting caught by them. Exercise good judgement before wandering off too far or getting into the water!

2. Take a Couple’s Lesson on Your Favorite Ocean Activity

It’s no surprise that Maui is a favorite for ocean activities of all kinds. From surfing and parasailing to ocean kayaking and stand up paddle boarding, the sky’s the limit on fun ocean activities you and your partner can learn to do together. You could even rent an outrigger canoe and go whale watching!

There is literally an instructor available for any ocean sport you can dream of. Even better, different beaches around the island offer waters for all skill levels making it an ideal location to learn at your pace and comfort level.

3. The Couple that Snorkels Together, Stays Together

Even if you’re not into ocean sports, you should never visit any island of Hawaii without throwing on a snorkeling mask at least once during your trip. Depending on where you put in, you can see an astonishing array of marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, eels, sting rays, fish of every size and gorgeous coral reefs reminiscent of scenery in the Little Mermaid.

You can do a group tour such as visiting Molokini or simply throw on your mask around any of the rocks edging the beaches for a fantastic sightseeing adventure.

Do not wear sunscreen when entering the water (it kills the coral reef) but do wear fins and keep aware of your surroundings as it’s easy to get farther out than you intended.

4. Take a Compassionate Communication Course Together

Having good communication skills with your partner is the key to a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. If you and your partner are interested in learning ways to deepen your connection, you’re in luck.

There are communication and couples workshops happening all over Maui on a regular basis. Our favorite is hosted by a phenomenal couple named Dee Chapon and Ken Moore, who offer couple’s dialogue coaching in both private and group settings.

5. Get a Couple’s Massage on Maui

Hawaii has one of the higher concentrations of massage therapists in the U.S. This means you and your sweetheart have your pick of nearly every type of massage and bodywork technique you could wish for, including the traditional Hawaiian technique known as Lomi-Lomi. Even better, many therapists will do a housecall right to your vacation villa!

Looking for a romantic date night with your sweetheart? How does dinner, some fantastic bodywork and then a soak in your own private hot tub as you watch the Hawaiian sun sink past the horizon sound?

6. Take in a Haleakala Sunrise

Speaking of the sun, you would be remiss not to make the effort to take in at least one sunrise from the top of Maui’s tallest dormant volcano, Haleakala. Rising 10,023 feet out of the Pacific Ocean, the views from Haleakala’s martian-like peak are truly transcendental.

You can make your reservations at recreation.gov. If you’re lucky, you might also be able to view the Brocken bow effect since Haleakala is one of the few places in the world this phenomenon can be experienced!

7. Take a Sunset Cocktail Cruise

Last but not least, nothing says romance like taking a cocktail cruise to watch the setting Maui sun. Feel the waves rocking gently beneath you, watch the water turn the color of liquid silver while sipping a mai-tai and see if you can catch the “green flash” of the sun before it settles for the night. If you’re visiting between November and May, you’ll likely see humpback whales frolicking in the distance to boot!
